    About the Club
    Founded in 1897, Agawam Hunt is one of the original 25 USGA Member Clubs. A family friendly, year-round club located minutes from downtown Providence, Agawam boasts some of the finest recreational facilities in New England, including a historic Donald Ross designed golf course. Agawam annually plays host to multiple USTA Grass Court Championships annually as well as many NEPGA events including the 2023 NEPGA Championship and the 2024 NEPGA Pro-Am Championship. Agawam will also be hosting a USGA Mid-Am Qualifier in 2024.

    Job Description

    The assistant golf course superintendent reports directly to the golf course superintendent. Under the superintendent's supervision, the assistant superintendent directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf course tees, greens, fairways, and cart paths; supervises the maintenance and repair of motorized and other mechanical equipment; and does related work as required. The assistant superintendent may serve in the superintendent's capacity during his/her absence. Assist in maintaining a championship 18-hole golf course and overall grounds maintenance for a 130-acre property. Duties will also include maintenance of 10 grass tennis courts, 4 HarTru clay courts, and landscaping around the clubhouse.

    Job Functions

    • Assists in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees and fairways; schedules work; and supervises the employees and the use of the equipment.
    • Instructs equipment operators on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment; supervises pesticide applications and/or operates and calibrates pesticide application equipment; and supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps, and in the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems. 
    • Assists in personnel management and evaluation, employee safety and personnel discipline. 
    • May modify the daily work schedule based on professional interpretation.

    Job Requirements

    • Working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course tees, fairways and greens; seeding and maintenance practices for golf course turf; planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs and trees; characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners; herbicides and pest control methods and materials; drainage control methods; and irrigation systems, including wells, pumps and automatic controls. 
    • Ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of workers and equipment; prepare clear and concise reports; and maintain effective employee and public relations.
    • Possession of a valid driver's license. 
    • May require current state certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator.

    Seasonal groundskeepers, perform routine manual labor involved in golf course or tennis court maintenance; do semi-skilled to skilled grounds construction and maintenance work; operate hand powered equipment and other equipment under the direction of the golf course superintendent, assistant superintendent of assigned supervisor. Each groundskeeper may be assigned responsibility for the care and maintenance of several designated holes on the golf. course and does related work as required.
     
    Typical functions:
    The seasonal groundskeeper:
    ⦁     Operates mowers and string trimmers in trimming greens, around tees, fence lines, banks and hillsides; edges cart paths; rakes and maintains sand bunkers.
    ⦁     Mows greens, tees, rough and other areas as directed by the superintendent or assigned supervisor; rakes sand bunkers with power rakes.
    ⦁     Sets tee markers; maintains ball washers and tee towels; maintains tennis courts; maintains water coolers; collects trash; sands and seeds tee and fairway divots.
    ⦁     Returns all equipment to designated location at the maintenance facility; cleans equipment and maintenance areas.
    ⦁     Maintains fuel and fluid levels on all equipment used on a daily basis, reports equipment problems or failures to the equipment manager immediately.
    ⦁     Helps in project work of green, tee, fairway and additional areas; grades and prepares soil base; lays sod; and seeds aforementioned areas.
    ⦁     Installs paths using gravel mixes; excavates and backfills ditches and trenches; repairs and replaces pipe on irrigation systems.
    ⦁    Must be able to lift 80 Ibs., as needed.
    ⦁    Performs other duties as directed by the superintendent or assistant superintendents, or an assigned supervisor.

    Employment standards:
    ⦁     Knowledge of methods and materials used in grounds and landscape construction/maintenance work.
    ⦁     Working knowledge of and ability to use hand and power tools: equipment.

    Alpine Country Club is a private 18-hole design by Geoffrey Cornish in Cranston, RI. Opened in 1960, the course comprises 150 acres which includes the golf course, extensive practice facilities, a pool area and horticultural amenities. The bunkers were renovated in the Fall of 2023 using the Better Billy method. Alpine has a growing, active membership with annual rounds at 27,000+ during a ten month season.

    Specific Duties:

    I. Position- GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

    II. Position Overview:
    Specifically looking for-
    HUNGRY, RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUAL DEDICATED TO THE PROFESSION LOOKING TO USE THEIR HANDS ON SKILLS TO MAKE OUR COURSE THEIR OWN!
    Responsible for maintenance and management of our 9 hole golf course and associated amenities at Kings Crossing Golf Club in North Kingstown, RI. The golf course property is owned and operated/managed by The Northeast Golf Company.  This position is with The Northeast Golf Company.  The course is open to the public and averages 20,000+ rounds per season.

    The responsibilities include: turf grass/plant material maintenance programs, property/asset management, personnel management, budget/forecasting, scheduling/maintenance of irrigation systems, pesticide applications, related recordings, and compliance of regulatory issues. The Golf Course Superintendent works to create an environment where staff is involved and enthusiastic, with open communications and respect for themselves, members, guests, the playing public and the property. We are seeking an individual who takes pride in presentation.  This is a position that will require hands on skills with turf management techniques and programs, equipment use and maintenance and efficient communications.

    III. Basic Functions:

    • Responsible for all phases of Golf Maintenance and Agronomic operations, cost control, and personnel.
    • Works closely with, advises, and coordinates with the Manager/Owner on any issues related to golf course maintenance.
    • Administers and enforces all Club rules, regulations and policies for maintenance staff.
    • Works closely with the Manager/Owner to operate the Golf Course in a fiscally responsible and professional manner.
    • Must be able to work independently and be a self-starting problem solver.

    IV. Primary Duties:

    • Oversees the care and maintenance of the turf, ornamental plants, shrubs, trees and natural areas, environmental zones and water bodies on the facility grounds.
    • Manages water usage and the Hunter irrigation system.
    • Recruits, supervises and retains full and part-time maintenance staff. Conducts employee performance evaluations and exercises disciplinary action.
    • Provides technical, operational and safety training for/with employees to ensure that staff is working within OSHA, club safety, state and federal guidelines for safe working conditions.
    • Provides and/or participates in the application and recording of chemical applications (fertilizers and pesticides) on the Club's grounds in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations- Must have current or applied for RI Pesticide Applicators License.
    • Coordinates all maintenance expenses associated with Golf Course Operations/Owner, including payroll, supplies, chemicals and fertilizers with General Manager/Owner.
    • Develops annual operating budget and plans for maintenance
    • Maintains records and completes required reporting. Order parts, supplies and equipment as needed.
    • Schedules maintenance practices around public play and outings to maximize efficiency and minimize disruption to operations.
    • Communicates course conditions, issues daily with Club Manager
    • Coordinates snow removal and winter maintenance activities.

    V. Knowledge & Skills Required:

    • Knowledge of management and maintenance of greens, fairways and roughs.
    • Knowledge of use and operating standards of equipment and tools used in golf course construction and maintenance work.
    • Skill in recruiting, supervising, training, monitoring, evaluating and motivating personnel.
    • Interpersonal skill to resolve conflict and work with supervisors, City officials, employees, and the general public.
    • Knowledge of safe use, mixing and application of chemicals and commercial products.
    • Knowledge of the game of golf, golf rules and methods of play.
    • Ability to anticipate personnel, equipment, and material requirements related to golf course maintenance and repair assignments.

    VI. Minimum Qualifications:

    • HUNGRY, RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUAL DEDICATED TO THE PROFESSION LOOKING TO MAKE A COURSE THEIR OWN!
    • 3-5 years experience as a Golf Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent
    • 2-year Degree or Certificate in Turf Management (or related field, like agronomy, horticulture, plant science, soil science).
    • Advance computer skills required for financial reporting and control of operations, including use of Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Valid Driver's License.
    • RI Pesticide Application License (or application for RI license)
    • Prefer Membership in the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America

    VII.     Compensation Package:
    Salary: Commensurate with the requirements of the position *This is a position with The Northeast Golf Company and will require in season commitment to reach our agronomic goals.  Employment will begin/expected February/March 2023
    Vacation: 5 days after 3 months of service, 5 additional days after 6 months of service plus off season flex time as course is closed in January and February.
    Term: One year, renewable with 6 month and 12 month performance reviews during year one.

    Kirkbrae Country Club in Lincoln, RI is, an 18-hole family oriented full service private club located just north of Providence that is currently looking to fill a 2nd Assistant/AIT position. The golf course is a Geoffrey Cornish design being renovated by Architect Mark Mungeam of Mungeam/Cornish Golf Design Inc.  The club has been host to all the major Rhode Island State Championships including the 100th and 116th RI State Amateur as well as US Amateur qualifiers.

    As the Assistant/AIT you will work closely with the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendents to implement a management program that:

    • produces a high standard of golf course conditioning.
    • provides a safe work environment for its staff.
    • clearly communicates a team and goal-oriented atmosphere.

    Qualifications

    • Preferred completion of a certificate program or have a 2- or 4-year degree in Turfgrass Management, but not required. Golf course experience along with the desire to grow in the industry will be considered.
    • The ability to obtain a RI pesticide license is required.
